Verity/Dexter: theSpace @ Symposium Hall – Annexe
21st August 2023
★★★
Verity and Dexter are the perfect match but their wedding becomes a complete disaster! This production could be described as being a tale of two sides – ‘the jilted bride, bored in her job, nagged by her family, trying to rebuild her life; and the guilty groom, whose money worries take him in a surprising direction‘ – it’s up to the audience to decide whose side they’re on.
Verity/Dexter has fairly obvious plot and whilst Jenna Elliot has a very strong vocals unfortunately it isn’t enough to really draw the audience in. Whilst Verity’s character is fairly well developed the others fail to have any impact. It is an interesting, if not slightly cheeky, idea to do the one performance from the viewpoint of Verity and then the next night from the viewpoint of Dexter. However, this is relying on audiences booking for two shows over two days which may be hard for many Fringe goers.
The performance reviewed was Verity’s side of the story, but it actually seemed more just a short story about her life. As mentioned Jenna Elliot plays the part very well, but fundamentally there isn’t really that much for the audience to care about with regards to her character and the plot is slightly bland and predictable. What is nice is to see live piano accompaniment and an original score, of which there are a few truly emotional, well written songs.
Verity/Dexter is an interesting concept but it doesn’t quite live up to its premise.
