A capella meets murder mystery – Steelworks‘ new all-singing, all-dancing show aims to be a ‘lyrical game of whodunnit’ when a dissatisfied diva falls to their demise on the international stage and it is a race against time to solve the case. This is Steelworks first Edinburgh Fringe show and is a triumph!
More than just a cappella – Vocal Vengeance manages to mix a hilarious plot with clever, upbeat numbers to create a unique show. The cast ooze confidence from the moment the first bar starts. Everyone in the cast is brilliant but Ela must be mentioned for her outstanding commitment to character, along with Rory whose song certainly got the audience laughing.
The acting through song is superb and the parody element of the show works brilliantly, from the alto clique comments to the over zealous choreographer most performers will have met some of these larger than life characters in their time.
There is a nice mix of genres from the Latin choral opening to a superb alternative rendition of ‘Cell Block Tango’ from Chicago as the audience works out who killed Johanna in true Poirot style.
The songs are all performed excellently with clever harmonies and arrangements. The choreography flows well without feeling forced and really helps move the show forward. The lighting also helps compliment the songs.
If you want to see something different this Fringe then Vocal Vengeance would definitely be a great one to catch. Hilarious story, sublime vocals and the confidence to pull it all off.
