Contemporary Scottish a cappella group Perfect Forth have returned to the Fringe after a limited five star run of their hit show Athena last year. This show combines original music inspired by Greek mythology and innovative arrangements of modern hits.
The vocals on display in this show are absolutely fantastic – amazing diction, soulful and superb tone. Athena utilises narration to guide the audience through each ancient Greek mythological God/Goddess and their associated song. A novel approach to a cappella but it works brilliantly.
The set is diverse featuring a range of modern songs with clever arrangements and dynamics and even some original songs which can be found on most streaming sites. Vocal percussion from Fraser Hume is amazing and Colum Findlay, Ailish Barry and Megan Grace deserve a particular mention for their acting through song and outstanding vocals. Perfect Forth is a large group and benefits from the range of voice types from sky high soprano notes to stunningly deep bass. The cast also throw rap into the mix with great results.
Perfect Forth aren’t afraid of showing emotion and the show is full of emotional songs and quiet, still moments which is excellent. The modern choreography is used well and stands apart from the traditional a cappella group movements. Transitions between songs are also thought of and are smooth.
The technical side of the show really works too. The microphones are shared and this is a super decision so that the backing harmonies don’t drown out the soloists. The singers have more than enough talent and projection to fill the room and do so confidently. Lighting is also used well to highlight the key element and dynamics of the songs.
All in all, Athena is a must see. Spectacular vocals, a brilliant selection of songs and superb arrangements. Don’t miss it!
