Telling the story of two women, 200 years apart, on either side of the hungry press machine IrrePRESSible centres on the life of the world’s first celebrity – Emma Hamilton, seen through the eys of a modern journalist transported back in time. IrrePRESSible is written in verse set to an energetic score and is billed as ‘a searing social commentary, a tale of blossoming female friendship, and an hour of fun’.

This production is certainly an interesting and relevant idea. Biographical shows are a hit right now so focusing on unknown Emma Hamilton as well as women’s rights and empowerment is a fantastic concept. This original show is fast paced and the narration helps move the plot along nicely.

There are some funny modern references infiltrating the script and it manages a perfect blend of emotion, history and humour. The script which is written in semi-rhyme is clever but at times the rhyming element falls flat. The cast and direction are engaging throughout and have the audiences entranced.

The cast are all very strong and capable. The talented ensemble take on the role of various characters to retell the story and do so with clear characterisation and confidence. Caitlyn Calfas, who plays Emma Hamilton, displays excellent characterisation and emotion throughout her portrayal of this interesting historical figure.

The use of the stage is good and helps tell the story in a lively way. Lighting is used well and the backing music is a good volume so that the cast can easily be heard.

IrrePRESSible features an original score by Carrie Penn and Toby Huelin which is very well written with catchy melodies and cleverly written lyrics by Gillian Lacey-Solymar. This is a fantastic introduction into a remarkable young woman’s life and is engaging, energetic and empathic. Definitely try to catch this at this years Fringe.
