Aquapella: Gilded Balloon Patter Hoose – Doonstairs

23rd August 2023

★★★★★

Bath’s award-winning a cappella group are back for their seventh year at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Aquapella claim to deliver a diverse and eclectic selection of music genres so there’s something for everyone and it’s safe to say they achieve this with a range of styles from indie to pop bangers.

Polished, slick and hugely talented; just what you’d expect from this top notch a cappella group. Aquapella certainly know how to put a set together. Unlike other groups, they stick what they know best – the music and do so excellently. The numbers are well executed and the harmonies and arrangements are superb. Aquapella are no strangers to the stage having just competed in the final ten of the ICCA competition in Broadway and their show is reflective of their professionalism.

There are no gimmicks – this show relies purely on the group’s fantastic vocals. The choreography works well, if not a little expected. The lighting works extremely well to highlight the different songs and dynamics. The set is a modern mix of songs from their new ten-track album which is available for download soon. The clever mash up section introduces a little humour to the show which the audience really responds well too.

This show is just what you’d expect from an a cappella group of this standard and they don’t let you down. If you’re looking for insane vocals, gorgeous harmonies and clever arrangements Aquapella is a brilliant show to sit back and enjoy.
