SUSPS – The A Capella ‘Friends’ Show: theSpace @ Niddry St – Lower Theatre
23rd August 2023
★★★★
The Bristol Suspensions are back in Edinburgh after their recent sell out run in 2023 and winning the UK National Championship title in 2021. SUSPS – The A Capella ‘Friends’ Show tells the story of friendship and scandal with chart-topping hits, familiar characters and fun choreography.
Whilst billed as ‘the one where suspensions does friends’ there are a lot of references to which you have to be quite an avid Friends fan to be able to actually get. Perhaps, at times, the script tries a little too hard with some of the jokes and friends quotes not quite landing. However, the music is what it’s really about and when the Bristol Suspensions perform, the songs are well executed with clever arrangements and harmonies.

The Bristol Suspensions clearly know how to perform this particular style of music and do so very well. The set is a mixture of modern hits with the mash-up section being a particular highlight of the hour long show. The songs are lively and upbeat with energetic choreography. The Bristol Suspensions have a new album coming out shortly on Spotify so do listen out for that.
Whilst the delivery of the script may fall slightly flat, the songs themselves are performed with brilliant vocals, great arrangements and nice dynamics. There is a lot of choice of a cappella groups on show at this year‘s Fringe with competition fierce, so if you like both a cappella music and class yourself as a Friends fan this show could be the one for you.
