At The Foot Of The Castle: artSpace@StMarks – St Marks church
19th August 2024
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Durham University’s Award-winning choir, Foot Notes, return to Edinburgh to bring their unique blend of a cappella repertoire. In in the beautiful St Mark’s Church situated at the foot of Edinburgh Castle, Foot Notes performs a diverse programme of contemporary chart-toppers, golden oldies and choral masterpieces.
This production certainly has something from for everyone from traditional choral pieces to pop songs, folk songs and even a barbershop-style medley thrown in for good measure. Many a cappella shows recently try to have a theme or act in between the songs – Foot Notes do not need any of these gimmicks, it has no flashy choreography/dialogue – just stunning vocals. The clever arrangements make use of all the voices and it is lovely to hear such powerful voices, using the church’s natural acoustics for amplification.

The choir are slick and polished and, despite being university students, seem as though they have been performing together for their whole lives. Each member of the group contributes to the pieces and the affect of the harmonies and the dynamics, as well as the arrangements of the songs are simply stunning. If you’re looking for traditional a cappella definitely make sure to see At The Foot Of The Castle at this year’s Fringe.
