⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Grownup Playhouse brings their new murder-mystery comedy musical to this year’s Fringe! When Detective Ben Stone is murdered at his own birthday party, there are five suspects have means, motive and opportunity. Trainee sleuth Molly Evans must take on the investigation. Full of show-stopping numbers and devilish twists, the audience joins Molly to try and solve the jaw-dropping murder, as the ever more ridiculous motives of the suspects are uncovered one by one – until the killer is finally revealed…

The Detective’s Demise is a cleverly written musical comedy. With witty lyrics, hilarious characters and a Poirot style ‘who done it?’ this is a great example of fresh new writing for the Fringe. The cast play their characters well although there are times when it is slightly hard to hear some of the dialogue.

It is great to see a live band accompanying the show, something fairly rare at the Fringe, and this really helps to move the pace along. There is a good ratio of songs to dialogue which moves the plot along nicely although there are some of pauses which feel ever so slightly long. The musical numbers, by Michael Rincon and Tom Rolph, are mostly modern in style even featuring a rap and the lyrics are witty and clever. The characters and their reason for killing Ben are well thought out and acted. Yes, some of the characters are a bit obvious however there is a clever twist towards the end of the show and the ending ties up all the loose strings neatly. The Detective’s Demise is a great example of fresh new musical at this year’s Fringe. This production could definitely be added to and developed further to create a full length performance and judging by its sold out audience today it would be very well received.
