Cadenza – Ed Fringe 2024

Cadenza: Upper Theatre (Round) – theSpace @ Niddry St

20th August 2024

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is Cambridge University’s premier a cappella groups fourth year performing at the Fringe. Cadenza has a unique style of a cappella managing to mix a range of genres from club to classical. The set boasts to include show stoppers, pop and jazz arrangements and also contemporary numbers so has something for everyone.

Cadenza is a traditional a cappella group with quite a classical sound. Each member is confident in their role and as they are not using mics needs to be vocally strong. The bass in particular is very strong. The musical numbers are chosen on a theme to represent a day in the life of a university student and whilst they maybe fairly similar, they are performed well. The songs feature a soloist taking lead vocals and it is nice to see each member having their turn in the limelight.

Unfortunately, some of the more modern numbers don’t quite work and the choreography feels a little bit uncomfortable at times. However, they are clearly group of accomplished singers and some of the slower numbers including ‘Hide and Seek’ are a real highlight of the show. This is a great show if you like traditional choral a cappella and are looking for a relaxing performance.
