A Jaffa Cake Musical: Pleasance Courtyard – Forth

Gigglemug Theatre are back with their latest sell-out smash hit show A Jaffa Cake Musical. Inspired by the 1991 tribunal which determined the true identity of a Jaffa Cake – it’s time to decide once and for all… cake or biscuit?
A Jaffa Cake Musical manages to mix the right amount of comedy, witty lyrics, larger than life characters and heart into this new musical. Plus it is about one of the nations most loved treats – the humble Jaffa cake which instantly draws people in to see this show.
The performance is really enjoyable and, whilst it does seem that they have used a rhyming dictionary for the majority of the lyrics, the music works well and the humour is pitched at the right level. The score is catchy and there are some little Easter eggs for musical theatre fans including well-known melodies from show such as Little Shop of Horrors, Hamilton and Fame. There are also lots of song reprisals which really work in a short performance to make the audience leave humming the songs.

During this particular performance the cast did suffer with a few tech issues and actually had the first show stop that I’ve seen at an Ed Fringe show over the past 7 years. However, they coped with these difficulties really well and it certainly didn’t stop the comedy from flowing.
With a small cast of four actors and three actor musicians, there are enough performers to keep it interesting and include different characters without the action being confusing or cluttered on the stage. The stage itself is used well and even includes some clever choreography.

Although the show does have a big finale, it is really left up to the audience to decide whether Jaffa cakes are in fact cakes or biscuits and I think this debate will live on forever. But if you want to see an upbeat, witty musical comedy then this is just the sweet treat for you.
