Girlz: Greenside, Jade Studio
18th August 2025
★★★
Girlz is a tale of friendship and love in the cut throat music industry. The show follows seven very different characters over the course of one tumultuous year as they experience the highs and lows of fame and wrestle with the tough choices it brings. The production also aims to tackle topical issues including mental health and sexual harassment.
Girlz has a great premise, but unfortunately tries to fit too much into a one hour show. It would have been better to have focused on one issue, for example Alex’s battle with her mental health and addiction, rather than have lots of storylines which aren’t dealt with in enough depth. The idea to tackle these issues is commendable but, at times, they feel shoe horned in and glossed over. As for the timeline of the plot perhaps the less said is better.
The songs are well performed, although the amplification could definitely have been better with some of the vocals being a little quiet. Meggie Hughes and Daniella Mirels’ performances are particularly impressive. The group numbers are catchy and very ‘pop’ style as you’d expect and the choreography, considering the size of the performance space, is exciting and well performed. However, it would have been nice to have had the performers singing live vocals rather than having a backing track for these numbers.
Overall, this musical is well performed and has moments of real emotion and conviction. It could do with some editing and rewriting but it is a good Fringe show and an excellent platform for new performers and writers to get seen.
