A Night at the Musicals – Ed Fringe 2025

A Night at the Musicals (Exeter Spotlights): theSpace @ Niddry St Lower Theatre

19th August 2025

★★★★

Featuring Exeter’s only performance choir, A Night at the Musicals is a collective of exciting musical theatre numbers relating to the theme of love, community and independence.

The Exeter Spotlights put on a real showcase of musical theatre songs from the likes of The Great Gatsby, Legally Blonde, Wicked and Mary Poppins. There is a large ensemble cast who perform with conviction. Each member of the cast have their chance to shine and for the most point the vocals are pitch perfect and acting through song is good. The songs are performed well and despite issues with the microphones the performers all gave each song their full heart.

The choreography is very energetic and performed well. Many of the songs have a large ensemble cast and as the stage is quite limited it does, at times, feel slightly crowded.

The show does feel very much like a college/university showcase with each song being separated by a short blackout. It would be good to have a running theme or similar to link the performances. One fantastic aspect of this show is the use of a 12-piece onstage band who are all fantastic. This makes a change from the use of backing tracks or use of only one or two instruments.

There is a wide range of songs which will suit most musical theatre fans. A Night At The Musicals is fun and upbeat and an enjoyable way to spend an hour at the Fringe.
