The Bristol Suspensions (International Champions and UK ICCA finalists) are back and this time bringing their brand new a cappella show for anyone unlucky in love, in the friend zone or learning to fall in love with themselves. This years show invites audiences to sit it in on the group’s most unproductive rehearsal to date, where they offer 10 ways to get over heartbreak – from putting yourself out there on dating apps to… getting back with your ex?
As always with this group, the vocals are polished and slick. The powerful harmonies are lovely and there are some great riffs thrown in too. Partially due to the topic the song choices lack variation and do begin to feel a little similar. The group do well with adding dynamic shifts to enhance the songs and add interest but at times the lyrics do get slightly lost. The songs are mostly modern pop songs with a Pitch Perfect style ‘riff off’ towards the latter part of the show. A particular highlight is ‘Mad World’ and their version of ‘For Good’ is especially well done.
The Bristol Suspensions definitely know their voices and how to mix them perfectly. At times the plot falls a little flat but it is during the superb musical arrangements that this show comes to life. If you are new to a cappella or a seasoned pro then this group puts on a great show.
