The Uncrackable Case: Pleasance Courtyard – Pleasance Two

Humpty Dumpty is dead but was he pushed? Did he jump? Or was it simply a great fall? The Uncrackable Case is a new comedy musical combining familiar fairy-tale faces with the legal courtroom, tabloid media and conspiracy theories. Follow Jill, a filmmaker who is on trial for egg-icide. With BB Wolf defending her and Little Red out for blood, this case is gripping the nation.
The Uncrackable Case features a whole host of traditional fairy tale characters, but adding an adult twist with fresh and often wild personalities. The cast of just four talented performers manage to take on various characters with a simple swap of accessory and accent. Fully committing to each character, the cast members are confident and can definitely hold the audiences attention. With similarities to the SplitLip company, the show is quick witted and very fast paced with each performer being onstage most of the time.
The music features a good range, moving between solid solos and ensemble numbers but could do with some more memorable tunes. A real drawing point of this show is that it is captioned which not only is great for accessibility but also to keep track of the ever changing characters which can be slightly confusing at the start.

The script is witty and full of puns but not all land with the audience, even with the helpful captioning. The plot is clever and there are some funny moments, especially the tortoise’s albeit brief appearance, but it does feel quite long and drawn out and could do with a bit more dynamics in the storytelling. The set is well built in a fairytale style and the lighting is fine but doesn’t necessarily add to the performance. However, the extra audio such as crowds cheering, social media comments and audible gasps really help move the story and help fill transitions between scenes.
The Uncrackable Case is lighthearted fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously – perfect for the Fringe. So if you think you know your fairy tales perhaps you’d better think again
