New musical-thriller, Picture This, follows stop-motion animation filmmaker Mary whose photographs start to come to life. However, the figures begin to control Mary’s life and decisions and before long she is left having to choose between the work she loves or her own sanity.
This one woman show, by Elise Marra, has an interesting concept but fails to take off. Whilst the musical numbers have clever lyrics they don’t really have any impact – perhaps just a comedy play would work better?
The witty script is, at times, funny and the interaction with the audience, breaking the fourth wall, works well. Unfortunately, quite a few of the jokes fell flat with most of the laughs coming from members of the production team. Picture This definitely doesn’t live up to its description with quite a lacklustre script with a confusing and anticlimactic ending.
