Vote: The Musical: Big at theSpaceTriplex

After a superb debut at last year’s Fringe, Vote: The Musical is back this year bigger and with just as much passion. Set in 1908 Britain during the rise of the suffragette movement, Vote: The Musical asks how far you would go to be heard and what it costs to demand change in a world built to resist it.
This year Vote returns with a five piece band who are utilised well throughout the show. Unfortunately due to the lack of mics the soloists vocals can sometimes get drowned out by the musicians and ensemble meaning their message gets lost. The cast are strong, with many having performed in the show last year, and clearly dedicated to the production. The leading cast work hard to portray a very dramatic storyline and do so with conviction. Daisy Bayer, Madeleine Jabir, Sami Littlefair and Lars Nunns in particular give very convincing and passionate performances.
Phoebe Perry and Cyrus Dean’s original score is moving and well performed and with the clear direction the show moves forward well and has plenty of action. At times, the timeline is a little confusing and the show may benefit from scaling back the storyline to focus on just the votes for women angle rather than having many subplots, which although highlight the plight of women, can over complicate and detract from the main message of the show.
Overall this year’s production of Vote: The Musical is bigger, with a band and much larger space and continues to deliver a dramatic story. It is emotional and the performances are heartfelt. This show continues to be a work in progress and it is great to see its journey.
