Sunshine on Leith: Music Hall at Assembly Rooms

Captivate Theatre are back again with the hit sell-out musical, Sunshine on Leith by Stephen Greenhorn. This musical follows Ally and Davy as they negotiate families, friendships and love in this funny and moving story featuring songs of The Proclaimers.
This is the perfect crowd pleaser of a musical for Edinburgh. The large Assembly Rooms Ballroom was packed out for this performance and the show went down a treat. The large cast are enthusiastic and give their all throughout, accompanied by an onstage band. The leads are excellent in role and despite the large venue manage to project their vocals and show real emotion. Sunshine on Leith is ultimately about love and family and with a diverse score of lively, upbeat numbers to some heartbreaking ballads it has something for everyone.
Whether you know of The Proclaimers music, the show and film or are complete newcomers to the musical the clear direction makes it easy to follow and connect with the characters. With no set or prop pieces, bar a few chairs and crates, the cast do well to transport the audience to various locations including the rowdy pub on match day, the hills overlooking the city and the busy high street. The large ensemble certainly help to create these scenes, many of whom take on various roles throughout the show.
Of course no Proclaimers show would be complete without a rendition of ‘500 miles’ and this is performed excellently as a slower arrangement, highlighting the emotions of each character and then a rousing large ensemble finale piece by which the whole audience are clapping along. Sunshine on Leith is a great show to sit back, relax and enjoy and Captivate Theatre do a splendid job.
