★★★★
Nearlyweds is a brand-new musical comedy by Jasmine Alice that aims to have the audience laughing, crying and singing along! It focuses on Lily, a people-pleasing Scottish bride as she runs away from her wedding, and Jake, a confused fiancé-to-be whose life isn’t as glamorous as he thinks. With an array of quirky and vibrant characters and hilarious scenarios to overcome, will they or won’t they say ‘I do’.
This is a funny rom-com style musical. Whilst the initial plot may not be the most original it is well written and by the finale the characters and their intertwined stories become clear with the ending leaves a smile on the audiences faces.
The cast are strong in role and put their all into the well written musical numbers. Kate Leyva particularly captures the audiences hearts as Gail and is a definite hit of the show. Sarah Alexandra Brown plays the leading role of Lily, the glue that holds this group and stir together. She has good stage presence and vocally impresses, especially during some of the more moving songs. James Turner also impresses as Jake, most notably during the emotional song about meeting his baby. Becca Linden is underused as the hilariously dry and sarcastic Crystal and Elise Burt channels her inner Miranda Priestly well.
Overall, this is a clever musical with good acting, just the right about of heart and comedy to make you actually care about the characters and some good original songs. Fun and entertaining Nearlyweds is a great new musical at this year’s Fringe.
