Northern Lights Presents… Horrible Harmonies (History as You’ve Never Heard It Before!): Doonstairs at Gilded Balloon Patter House
19th August 2026
★★★★★
Northern Lights – Durham University’s A Cappella Champions – are set to take the audience on a musical journey through time.
Northern Lights certainly prove why they recently placed second in the world final of the ICCA competition, let alone why they have been finalists for the past for four years. Their sets are electric – a great mix of comedy, dance and outstanding vocals. The choreography is innovative and performed excellently with the group being slick, polished and enthusiastic.

Sometimes gimmicks and themes don’t work but this ‘horrible harmonies’ theme is brilliant. The audience interaction to help choose a time period to learn about is clever as are the witty lyric changes to some of the songs. However, what makes this show so excellent is the vocals and tone of the group. The arrangements showcase everyone and include some fantastic dynamics and show-stopping moments with some of the best vocal percussion heard at this year’s fringe. The set is a clever mix of modern pop songs, lively and upbeat with some emotional quieter moments thrown in.

Edinburgh Fringe is always a great showcase for a capella and Northern Lights may be one of the best. This is a performance for everyone; full of insane vocals, superb arrangements and clever choreography- this is one show not to be missed!
