A Night at the Musicals: Greenside @ Nicolson Square – Emerald Theatre
24th August 2022
Featuring Exeter’s greatest show choir performers, A Night at the Musicals is a collective of exciting musical theatre numbers relating to the theme of being unapologetically you and making a lasting impact on the world around you.
The choir is very large and most of the time this works but at times the ensemble drown out the lead vocalists. It is amazing to see a 9-piece band onstage and they are fantastic, but again at times it is hard to hear the vocals due to the band. The vocals themselves are very good with some performers really coming into their own during solo numbers. The choir is fairly loud throughout and could definitely experiment more with dynamics and harmonies. At times the singers sound as though they are competing with each other rather than being one sound. However, the songs are upbeat and lively and the choreography, whilst being very drama school showcase style, certainly adds to the fun feel of the show.
The set choice is interesting. In particular the boys rendition of ‘Turn It Off’ from Book Of Mormon is excellent and full of comic moments and ‘Mama Who Bore Me’ from Spring Awakening is performed really well with an interesting arrangement. The songs chosen are very much a range of modern Broadway songs and this may deter some audience members who may be expecting to hear some well known tunes. Whilst this isn’t necessarily a bad thing some of the audience clearly didn’t know any of the songs and perhaps having more of a mixture may help.
Overall, A Night at the Musicals is good fun, upbeat and energetic. If show tunes and Glee is your thing then this is the one for you.
